Suwanee, GA

Suwanee is a city in Gwinnett County and a suburb northeast of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia. In the 2010 census, the population was 15,355; By 2019, this number had increased to around 20,907. In parts of Forsyth and Fulton counties, the mailing address is also Suwanee and its zip code (30024 ). Suwanee, like most cities in Georgia, began as a Native American village. It was built on the Chattahoochee River where societies flourished. The city of Suwanee was founded and officially recognized by the United States government in 1837 with the establishment of a post office. In 1871, the Georgia Air Line Railroad was built through Suwanee, and in 1880, the Rhodes House Hotel was built for railroad travelers. It helped bring people through the city and contributed to business and economic activity. In 1881, a fire destroyed all but one of the buildings on Main Street. Between 1880 and 1920 the population did not grow at all, from 216 to 241 people in just 40 years. As of 2015, Suwanee had a population of over 18,000 , From 1933 to 1936, the now busy Buford Highway was built through Suwanee. In 1960, Interstate 85 was built to extend south from Suwanee, where it then ended. Several elementary schools have opened in Suwanee over the past 100 years, including North Gwinnett High School and Suwanee Elementary School. The first known establishment of Suwanee High School was in 1880, when it was a one-room schoolhouse. The first town hall was built in the early 1960s and the second town hall in 1997. The Center was built in 2005 and completed in 2009, when the City Hall moved to its current location. In 2003, Suwanee was voted Best City by the Georgia Municipal Association and Trend Magazine. In 2017, the City of Suwanee was recognized by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) as a Green Community, certified at the Bronze level for the city’s commitment to environmental protection and leadership in sustainable practices.
